Homemade Popsicles to Make with the Kids

The heat is on! It is that time of year that kids love nothing more than a frozen ice pop to quench their thirst after playing outside.

Here are few easy peasy recipes to make.  The kids can help out or you can take 5-10 minutes to make them during nap time.

Of course you can go to the store and buy popsicles, but making these will save money, give you a healthier option (no artificial colors and yucky ingredients), and provide a fun little activity to do together. After all, your favorite chefs likely got started in their family kitchen.

We want to keep this as easy as possible so the measurements just depend on how many you are making and the size of your molds. As you can see in the photo our molds are small. A lot of recipes call for you to add sugar and to puree the blends. You can do that but I like these because the kids can see and taste yummy chucks of fruit and it saves you a step. There will be some suggestions for other combinations at the end of the article if you wanted to puree.

I use the ice pop molds from IKEA but you can find them at most grocery stores or home stores.

Each tray I have makes 6 ice pops, so if you go through them in a day or 2, then whip up a new combination next.

My 2 year old loved these Mango Banana pops.

MANGO BANANA

1 Mango, pitted and cut into small bite size pieces

1 banana

1 to 1½ cup of OJ or other juice blend.

*If you want to use milk instead,  just pop everything in a blender first

Just cut up the fruit and add a couple pieces of each to the mold and fill it up with the juice. Put the sticks in and pop these in the freezer. Wait a couple hours. It is just too easy!

If you have little ones like me, the waiting is the hardest part. I keep hearing, “Mommy, when are the popsicles going to be ready?”

I think she likes it, huh? 🙂

Here are some other fun combinations to try:

Strawberries (sliced or cut into small pieces) and Lemonade

Raspberries with Lemonade

Mixed berries with Lemonade

If your kids don’t like them tart, just add a tiny amount of agave and blend.

Grapes (cut in ½) mix with apple juice

* Variation: Mix applesauce with frozen grape concentrate.

Orange or mandarin slices with banana and OJ

Pineapple, orange, banana – Puree equal amounts of each (depending on how many you are making and the size of your molds) and pour into mold.

Watermelon Pops – Cut into chucks, puree, and pour into mold.

We hope you enjoy these ice pops and some special kitchen time with your kids.
